Start with the cables you reach for every day

If the charger you need is usually under a pile of other leads, start by taking out just the ones in daily use. In a shared Southsea flat that might be two phone cables. In a busy Portsmouth family home it could include a tablet lead and the charger for the school laptop. Choose a spot near where you already use them and give each cable a place to return to.

Match each spare to something you own

Try one small pile at a time. Put camera leads with the camera and the games controller cable with the console accessories. For spares that several people use, add a little paper flag with the device name or cable type. If you are unsure what a cable belongs to, set it aside while you check. A matching plug shape alone does not tell you whether a charger is suitable for a device.

Give the drawer a simple layout

Use a shallow tray or an old glasses case to keep small leads visible. Loop each one loosely and secure it with a reusable tie if it tends to tangle. Leave the everyday leads near the front. Give travel adaptors or occasional spares their own section so you can find them without emptying the drawer. Keep the drawer for storage and use an open surface when charging.

Make it easy for everyone to put things back

Try the layout for a week. If a cable always ends up beside a particular chair, see whether its storage spot can move closer. A child who borrows the tablet lead may find a coloured tray easier to recognise than a written label. If you regularly take a charger out with you, decide whether it lives in your bag or goes back in the tray when you get home.

Review the leads you set aside

Once you have checked the devices you still use, decide which extras earn their space. Keep a spare where it saves you hassle, such as in a travel pouch. Set aside unwanted electrical items for an appropriate recycling route and check what the collection point accepts before you go. The next time you replace a device, pair the new lead with it and review the old one while you still know what it was for.
