A move brings enough decisions without discovering that the kettle, clean bedding and favourite bedtime toy are scattered across twenty boxes. A little sorting before you pack can make the arrival easier.
Begin with the easiest decisions
Choose a small category with few emotional attachments: duplicate utensils, worn-out towels or stationery that no longer works. Decide what you want to take before putting it into a box. Leave sentimental belongings for a time when you have more space and energy.
Avoid turning the whole house upside down in a single session. Finish a manageable area, clear the floor and keep everyday essentials accessible.
Pack for the first evening
Set aside a clearly marked first-night bag or box. Tailor it to your household: bedding, toiletries, a change of clothes, chargers, a few mugs and familiar comforts for children. Keep anything you need to access personally with you rather than relying on a box arriving in a particular order.
Talk through who will carry that bag and where it will go on arrival. A good label only helps if everyone knows to look for it.
Label for the home you are going to
Use the destination room and a brief description of the contents. “Bedroom — everyday clothes” is more useful than “miscellaneous”. Put the label on more than one side so it can still be read when boxes are stacked.
If rooms do not yet have clear names, agree a simple naming system with the people helping you. Keep valuables and personal information out of labels visible to others.
Unpack for function first
Begin with somewhere to sleep, wash, eat and find tomorrow’s clothes. Decorative finishing touches can wait. It is fine for a new home to take shape in stages.
Once you have used the rooms for a little while, revisit storage decisions. You may discover that the place you first chose for something is inconvenient. Moving it is part of settling in, not a failure to organise properly.
Bring in a helping hand
The Home Helper can discuss pre-move decluttering and unpacking support. These are organising services, not a removals service. Share your planned move date, the spaces involved and your postcode so Amal can confirm what is possible and provide a tailored quote.
